NRA Personal Protection in the Home Instructor Training

Course Outline:  
A Personal Protection in the Home Instructor Candidate must be a NRA Certified Pistol Instructor prior to attending Personal Protection in the Home Instructor Training.
Part 1: Basic Instructor Training (BIT). Participants must have completed the BIT within the past two years. This is not covered during this course. If BIT has not been completed within the past two years, please contact the instructor at the link below.
Part 2: NRA Pistol Instructor Training (9 Hours)
  • Introduction to NRA Personal Protection in The Home Course Outline and Lesson Plans.
  • Teaching Personal Protection in The Home Lesson I: Introduction to Defensive Shooting.
  • Teaching Personal Protection in The Home Lesson II: Basic Defensive Pistol Skills.
  • Teaching Personal Protection in The Home Lesson III: Firearms and the Law, Possession, Ownership and the Use of Deadly Force.
  • Teaching Personal Protection in The Home Lesson IV: Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation.
  • Teaching Personal Protection in The Home Lesson V: Selecting a Pistol for Self-Defense.
  • Teaching Personal Protection in The Home Lesson VI: Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities.
  • Teaching Personal Protection in The Home Lesson VII: Course Review, Examination and Course Conclusion.
Upon successful completion, attendees will receive an NRA Instructor Course Completion Card and an official certificate from the NRA.
Duration: 1 day / 9 hours

Location: Classroom and Range time.

Equipment Requirements:
  • Pistol(s) with a strong side holster and belt. Major caliber 9mm, 357 SIG, 40 S & W, 45 ACP or Equivalent. (Definition: a Strong side holster is a holster that wears on your right hip if you are right hand or your left hip if you are left handed.)
  • Minimum: 3 Pistol Magazines with a magazine belt holder or 3 revolver speedloaders.
  • 100 Rounds of Ammunition suitable for your Pistol(s).
  • Wrap around eye wear.
  • Ear plugs and/or ear muffs.
  • Hydration system.
  • Orange/Yellow chamber empty flag.
  • 5 Rounds of dummy ammunition for each of your firearm(s).
  • Footwear Suitable for rapid movement.
  • Cases for all firearms.
  • A three ring binder (3 in Thick).
  • Notebook/paper and pens/pencils/highlighters for classroom usage.
  • Your favorite training aid that you may use for teaching.
  • Recommended: Lunch, snacks, drinks to keep you properly energized for the entire time.
  • Small Flashlight.
  • Sunscreen, hat or baseball cap and knee/elbow pads are recommended.
  • Pre-Qualification Questionnaire
  • Pre-Test: 90 Percent of Higher
  • NRA pre-course qualification - Download (Appendix 6 – see registration details). Attendees are required to have a minimum passing score of 80 out of a possible 100 points.
  • NRA Certified Pistol Instructor.
  • If the training location is in NY state and you are bringing a pistol, you must have a NY state valid pistol permit or be between the age of 14 and 20 years and accompanied by a parent/guardian that has a valid NY state pistol permit. If the training is outside NY state, you must adhere to all the laws and regulations governing the possession of firearms in the state.
Additional Pertinent Information:
  • Please thoroughly clean, lube and inspect your firearm(s) prior to coming to class.
  • Please keep your guns and all ammunition in your vehicle until you are directed to retrieve them. For your safety and the safety of everyone, NO LIVE AMMUNITION will be allowed in the classroom at any time under any circumstances.
  • If you carry a firearm for personal protection, you must leave that in your vehicle during the class.
  • All guns must be cased for transportation to/from the range.
  • Please plan appropriately for the weather. We will be outdoors all day. Course will be held rain or shine.
  • Footwear that fully encloses your feet is required.
