NRA Personal Protection in the Home

Course Outline:  
  • Part 1: Safety.  
  • Part 2: Mental Preparation  
  • Part 3: Developing Defensive Shooting Skills 
  • Part 4: Strategies for Home and Personal Defense  
  • Part 5: Firearms, Self Defense and the Law (This module is taught by an attorney or a qualified person certified to teach self-defense laws & legalities in NY State)
  • Part 6: Selecting Firearms, Ammunition and Accessories for Personal Protection

Upon successful completion, attendees will receive an official NRA certificate. 

Enrichment Module: This 50 minute module on holster selection and the use of other non pistol type of firearms/gear for personal protection in the home IS NOT PART OF THE NRA PPIH COURSE. It is designed to expose attendees to the vast world of holsters, holster selection and other avenues for personal protection. This is typically given during the lunch period. Attendees are NOT required to attend this seminar. 

Location: Classroom and Range time.

Equipment Requirements:

  • Pistol or revolver.
  • Recommended: strong side holster and belt. (Definition: a Strong side holster is a holster that wears on your right hip if you are right hand or your left hip if you are left handed.)
  • Minimum: 3 Pistol Magazines or 3 revolver speedloaders
  • 150 Rounds of suitable Ammunition  
  • Wrap around eye wear.  
  • Ear plugs and/or ear muffs.  
  • Hydration system.  
  • 5 Rounds of dummy ammunition.  
  • Cases for all firearms.
  • Pen and a 1 subject notebook.
  • Small Flashlight.
  • Sunscreen, hat or baseball cap and knee/elbow pads are recommended.
  • Snacks, drinks, lunch, etc. are highly recommended.


  • Recommended NRA Basic Pistol or permission of the Instructor. 
  • If the training location is in NY state and you are bringing a pistol, you must have a NY state valid pistol permit or be between the age of 14 and 20 years and accompanied by a parent/guardian that has a valid NY state pistol permit. If the training is outside NY state, you must adhere to all the laws and regulations governing the possession of firearms in the state.
Additional Pertinent Information:
  • Please thoroughly clean, lube and inspect your firearm(s) prior to coming to class.
  • Please keep your guns and all ammunition in your vehicle until you are directed to retrieve them. For your safety and the safety of everyone, NO LIVE AMMUNITION will be allowed in the classroom at any time under any circumstances.
  • If you carry a firearm for personal protection, you must leave that in your vehicle during the class.
  • All guns must be cased for transportation to/from the range.
  • Please plan appropriately for the weather. We will be outdoors all day. Course will be held rain or shine.
  • Footwear that fully encloses your feet is required.
