NRA Instructor Pistol Shooting Course

Course Outline:  

Phase 1 (Online): Participants must successfully complete the "NRA Basics of PIstol Shooting Course" found online at https://onlinetraining.nra.org prior to attending Phase 2. The cost for this module is $60 paid directly to the NRA at the time of registration for the online course.


Phase 2 (16 hours): The second phase of the Pistol Instructor course is conducted in person.  It is divided into two Parts as shown below. The cost is listed at the bottom of this page and is due at the time of registration.

Part 1: Basic Instructor Training (6 Hours).

Part 2: NRA Pistol Instructor Training (10 Hours)

  • Introduction to NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans
  • Teaching Pistol Lesson I: Pistol Knowledge and Safe Handling
  • Teaching Pistol Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge & The Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
  • Basic Pistol Shooting Instructional Method
  • Teaching Pistol Lesson III: Firing the First Shots
  • Teaching Pistol Lesson IV: Scoring Targets, and Selecting and Maintaining a Pistol
  • Evaluating and Improving Performance of Beginning Pistol Shooters
  • Teaching Pistol Lesson V: Continued Opportunities for Skill Development
  • Pistol Instructor Examination and Course Conclusion

Upon successful completion, attendees will receive an NRA Instructor Course Completion Card and an official certificate from the NRA.


Duration: Multi-day / 16 Hours

Facility: Classroom and Range time.

Equipment Requirements:
  • Pistol(s) with a strong side holster and belt. Major caliber 9mm, 357 SIG, 40 S & W, 45 ACP or Equivalent. (Definition: a Strong side holster is a holster that wears on your right hip if you are right hand or your left hip if you are left handed.)
  • Minimum: 3 Pistol Magazines with a magazine belt holder or 3 revolver speedloaders
  • 200 Rounds of Ammunition suitable for your Pistol(s).
  • Wrap around eye wear.
  • Ear plugs and/or ear muffs.
  • Hydration system.
  • 5 Rounds of dummy ammunition for each of your firearm(s).
  • Cleaning Kit.
  • Nitrile or Latex Gloves.
  • Footwear Suitable for rapid movement.
  • Cases for all firearms.
  • A three ring binder (3 in Thick).
  • Notebook/paper and pens/pencils/highlighters for classroom usage.
  • Your favorite training aid that you may use for teaching.
  • Sunscreen, hat or baseball cap and knee/elbow pads are recommended.
  • Snacks, drinks, lunch, etc. are highly recommended.

    Recommended: Lunch, snacks, drinks to keep you properly energized for the entire time

Pre-requisites:
  • Pre-course Questionnaire - Download
  • Pre-Test: 90 Percent of Higher
  • NRA Pre-course Qualification - Download (Appendix 5 – see registration details). Attendees are required to have a minimum passing score of 80 out of a possible 100 points.
  • If the training location is in NY state and you are bringing a pistol, you must have a NY state valid pistol permit or be between the age of 14 and 20 years and accompanied by a parent/guardian that has a valid NY state pistol permit. If the training is outside NY state, you must adhere to all the laws and regulations governing the possession of firearms in the state.
  • Successful completion of Phase 1 with a score of 90% or higher
Additional Pertinent Information:
  • Please thoroughly clean, lube and inspect your firearm(s) prior to coming to class.
  • Please keep your guns and all ammunition in your vehicle until you are directed to retrieve them. For your safety and the safety of everyone, NO LIVE AMMUNITION will be allowed in the classroom at any time under any circumstances.
  • If you carry a firearm for personal protection, you must leave that in your vehicle during the class.
  • All guns must be cased for transportation to/from the range.
  • Please plan appropriately for the weather. We will be outdoors all day. Course will be held rain or shine.
  • Footwear that fully encloses your feet is required.
