NRA Basic Pistol - Phase 2

Course Outline:  

Phase 1 (Online): Participants must successfully complete the "NRA Basics of PIstol Shooting Course" found online at prior to attending Phase 2. The cost for this module is $60 paid directly to the NRA at the time of registration for the online course.

Phase 2 (6 hours): The second phase of this course is conducted in person at the range.  The cost is listed at the bottom of this page and is due at the time of registration. The outline and details are shown below.
  • Safety & Responsible Ownership. 
  • Pistol/Revolver Mechanisms and Operation. 
  • Ammunition Fundamentals. 
  • Building Pistol Shooting Skills: 
    • Fundamentals, Positions, Common Errors. 
    • Clearing Stoppages 
    • Two Handed vs one Handed Shooting 
  • Pistol Maintenance, Selection & Use

Upon successful completion, attendees will receive an official NRA certificate. 

Enrichment Module: This 30 minute module on holster selection IS NOT PART OF THE NRA BASIC PISTOL COURSE. It is designed to expose attendees to the vast world of holsters and holster selection. This is typically given during the lunch period. Attendees are NOT required to attend this seminar.  

Duration: 1 day/6 Hours

Location: Classroom and Range time.

Equipment Requirements:
  • Pistol or revolver.
  • Recommended: strong side holster and belt. (Definition: a Strong side holster is a holster that wears on your right hip if you are right hand or your left hip if you are left handed.)
  • Minimum: 2 Pistol Magazines. Recommended: 3 Magazines
  • 100 Rounds of suitable factory Ammunition for your pistol or revolver.
  • Wrap around eye wear. 
  • Ear plugs and/or ear muffs. 
  • Hydration system / water bottle. 
  • 5 Rounds of dummy ammunition suitable for your firearm
  • Cases for all firearms.
  • Cleaning kit. 
  • Nitrile or Latex Gloves.
  • Pen and a 1 subject notebook.
  • Sunscreen, hat or baseball cap is recommended.
  • Snacks, drinks, lunch, etc. are highly recommended.


  • If the training location is in NY state and you are bringing a
    pistol, you must have a NY state valid pistol permit or be between the age of 14 and 20 years and accompanied by a parent/guardian that has a valid NY state pistol permit. If the training is outside NY state, you must adhere to all the laws and regulations governing the possession of firearms in the state.
Additional Pertinent Information:
  • Please keep your guns and all ammunition in your vehicle until you are directed to retrieve them. For your safety and the safety of everyone, NO LIVE AMMUNITION will be allowed in the classroom at any time under any circumstances.
  • If you carry a firearm for personal protection, you must leave that in your vehicle during the class.
  • All guns must be cased for transportation to/from the range.
  • Please plan appropriately for the weather. We will be outdoors all day. Course will be held rain or shine.
  • Footwear that fully encloses your feet is required.
