SDFA Tactical Rifle 1

Course Outline:     
  • Introduction, Safety, Nomenclature & Sight in 
  • Responsible Firearm Ownership 
  • Efficient Functionality, Speed & Tactical Reloads and Malfunction Clearances 
  • Shooting Positions: Standing, Squatting, Kneeling, Sitting and Prone 
  • Tactical Equipment Selection for Recreational and Competitive Shooting 
  • Static & Dynamic Shooting Drills & Techniques 
  • Multiple Shot Drills, Skills & Techniques 
  • Shooting on the Move (Forward, Backward, Laterals, Off line of Attack and Adverse Angles) 
  • Tactics, Transitions to Secondary Firearm Systems and Bilateral Rifle Manipulations
Enrichment Module: This 45 min lunch time module is focused on the proper selection of tactical equipment/gear for competitive and/or recreational shooting applications. Participants are given a brief description and demonstration of various potential selections.

Duration: 1 day / 9 Hours

Equipment Requirements:
  • Rifle or Carbine with a Sling. 
  • 2-point sling recommended over a single point sling.
  • Pistol with a strong side holster and belt (Optional, a Pistol is not required). (Definition: a Strong side holster is a holster that wears on your right hip if you are right handed or your left hip if you are left handed.)
  • Minimum: 5 Rifle Magazines and 2 Pistol Magazines or 2 revolver speedloaders
  • Recommended Round Count: 550 rounds of rifle, 100 rounds of pistol. Participants are generally able to shoot a lower round count if they proceed conservatively in most of the drill.
  • Vest or Belt mounted Mag holders for both rifle & pistol.
  • Wrap around eye wear. 
  • Ear plugs and/or ear muffs. 
  • Hydration system. 
  • Footwear suitable for fast movement. 
  • Orange/Yellow chamber empty flag. 
  • 5 Rounds of dummy ammunition for Rifle. 
  • Extra Batteries for all optics. 
  • Cases for all firearms. 
  • Pen and a 1 subject notebook.
  • Lawn chair and bug spray are highly recommended.
  • Sunscreen, hat or baseball cap and knee/elbow pads are recommended.
  • Snacks, drinks, lunch, etc. are highly recommended.


  • Recommended NRA Basic Rifle and Basic Pistol or permission of the Instructor.
  • If the training location is in NY state and you are bringing a pistol, you must have a NY state valid pistol permit or be between the age of 14 and 20 years and accompanied by a parent/guardian that has a valid NY state pistol permit. If the training is outside NY state, you must adhere to all the laws and regulations governing the possession of firearms in the state.
Additional Pertinent Information:
  • Please thoroughly clean, lube and inspect your firearm(s) prior to coming to class.
  • Please sight in your rifle for 50 Yds or 50 Meters prior to arriving to class.
  • If you carry a firearm for personal protection, you must leave that in your vehicle during the class.
  • All guns must be cased for transportation to/from the range.
  • Please plan appropriately for the weather. We will be outdoors all day. Course will be held rain or shine.
  • Footwear that fully encloses your feet is required.
